YOUTH PROGRAMS

Thai Education Centre of Victoria Inc. is a non-profit organisation which was established to strengthen Thai education for the Thai community. In particular, we aim to support and help the Thai community by arranging Thai education for children to learn Thai language and culture. VCE THAI PROJECT

Thai VCE seminar 2018
Under supported by Royal Thai Embassy and Royal Thai Consulate of Melbourne
We will arrange seminar Thai VCE in October 2018. Please see more detail here.

VCE is Victorian Certificate Education for senior school in Victoria. Students who are studying at high school or senior school (Year 11-12) must choose 5 subjects to complete their education at years 11-12. One of the subjects that students can choose is a second language (other than English).

To make this happen, we need your support. We require minimum of 30 students on each year level to be able to get approval from Victoria Government to have Thai in VCE study.

If the project is successful, Thai VCE will open in Victoria first then the other states can use this model and curriculum to open Thai language at high school in Australia.

What is VCE?

VCE is Victorian Certificate Education for senior school in Victoria. Students who are studying at high school or senior school (Year 11-12) must choose 5 subjects to complete their education at years 11-12. One of the subjects that students can choose is a second language (other than English).

What is a second language at VCE?

The Victorian government supports all schools in Victoria to have a second language to be taught and to be chosen at year 11-12. Currently, there are 46 languages other than English approved for the subject at high schools in Victoria. There are many Asian languages that have been approved for VCE such as Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and Khmer.

How will Thai be approved for VCE?

Thai Education centre of Victoria Inc has managed the VCE Thai project with financial assistance by grants from Royal Thai Embassy.

What have we done?

Under support by the Royal Thai Embassy and Thai community in many states the project has achieved the following:

  • Arranged seminar to brainstorm the possibility for VCE Thai project in 2010.

  • Research to collect data of potential Thai students who would like to learn Thai as a subject at high school in 2010-2012 and then continue to get more information in 2013-14.

  • Built up network of Thai community schools with other states such as New South Wales, Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania.

  • Collated profiles of qualified teachers who can teach VCE Thai in different states and also be employed as examiners.

  • Produced a draft of VCE Thai Curriculum.

  • Produced materials for VCE Thai Units 1-2.

  • Working cooperatively with VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority).

  • With the Royal Thai Embassy, submitted a report and applied for VCE Thai to VCAA in October 2015.

  • Established Thai Education Centre of Victoria Inc to run VCE Thai project from 2016.

  • Extend more branches to set up The Centre to learning Thai and culture for children age 4-16 at Thai temple and Thai community over in Victoria from 2016.

Thai Ties Cultural

Thai-Ties Cultural Program (เยาวชนคืนถิ่นไทยเพื่อดำเนินรอยตามเบื้องพระยุคลบาท)

After the Thai Education Center of Victoria Incorporated was established in June 2016 we started to make a youth program for the Thai community to encourage youths with a Thai background to learn about Thai culture and language. Suddenly, all Thai people got very sad news and our hearts were broken as our beloved King Rama IX passed away on 13 October 2016.  All Thai people talked a lot about how much hard work our King has done for Thailand.

Therefore, this project was developing to take some youths who have Thai background and were born here or who moved to live here back to Thailand.  This way they will learn about King Rama IX projects and also learn Thai history and culture about their heritage. This group will be a pilot group and will be the first youth program. We hope they will come back to Australia with some ideas about King Rama IX’s project and how they can continue to do something to contribute to the Thai community in the future.

The project has been supported by the Royal Thai Embassy in Australia. Now the program is coming to life as we have 9 students aged 12-16 who were selected to join this program.

Objective

1. To provide opportunities for young Thai-Australians to travel to Thailand to experience and learn Thai history and culture.

2. To provide opportunities for young Thai-Australians to learn about King Rama IX created projects that inspired and enhanced the lifestyles of Thai citizens in the past decades.

3. To provide opportunities for young Thai-Australians to learn and communicate in Thai. This will be an opportunity for youth to exchange knowledge with Thai people in Thailand

4. To provide young Thai-Australians the experience of traveling without their parents, developing strong new relationships among their fellow travelers and project coordinators.

5. To return to Australia to share their knowledge and experiences with their communities in Australia.

For this project, which is a part of Youth Program for Thai Community in Victoria, Thai Education Centre will arrange different activities to enhance/engage teenagers who come from Thai background or Thai family to learn and understand their culture while they growth up in multicultural Victoria, Australia. This program will improve their skills in communication and build up their confidence with social skills. This program will help teenage children understand how to live in a multicultural society.
